Before— and After

When you’re young— they want you older,
When you’re old— they want you young;
When she’s gone— you wish you’d told her,
When she’s back— you bite your tongue.

When you’re cross—its ‘Let’s not fight, dear,’
When you’re tired— it’s party time!
When you’re hard— it’s ‘Not tonight, dear,’
When you’re prose— she speaks in rhyme.

When you’re broke— it’s ‘I’ve been thinking...’
When you’re rich— it’s ‘...join the gym!’
When you’re ill— its ‘...all that drinking...’
When you’re dead— it’s ‘Who? Oh, him!’
