True Love

True love shoulders any weight,
   Soldiering in secret mazes,
Shreds the wire and scales the gate,
   Blind to disapproving gazes.
Shut out— true love battles through.
(And if it fail, it was not true.)

True love’s warrant knows no border,
   Forging visas, bribing guards,
Feral, like some crazed marauder
   Practising absurd charades.
Thwarted— true love turns the screw.
(And if it fail, it was not true.)

True love shames the rising sun
   Laughing at its feeble heat;
In that glare, strange deeds are done,
   Love knows nothing of defeat.
Banished— true love plots anew.
(And if it fail, it was not true.)
